The Padmavyuha

Padmavyuha is a well known War formation used by Dronacharya, the chief of Kaurava army against the Pandavas in a mission to capture Yudhishtira but eventually resulted in the death of Abhimanyu.

Padmyavyuha was a lotus like dynamic defensive system which consists of multiple tiers which leads the warrior entering it to captivity. It was designed in such a way that it allows the intruder to come along the spherical formation to reach the target which was located at the center of it but as the formation is dynamic, it will be rotating and the way in which the intruder given access will be closed as soon as he passes a tier. This locking of exit results in the death of the warrior even before he reaches the target.

The distance between any two tiers will be equal to a space of three hands and the number of tiers depends on the strength of the army.Signals will be given by the fellow soldiers on completion of clearing each tier by the enemy warrior and the deeper he gets into the formation, complexity increases.

Many formations have a counter-measures using which they can be cracked but padmavyuha is not as such one. The cracking technique was only known to a few like Lord Krishna, Arjuna and Pradyumna(Son of Lord Krishna). In Mahabharata, it was mentioned that Abhimanyu learnt about Padmavyuha while in his mother's womb but was unable to listen how to escape for it.

Abhimanyu chose a unique way while entering it. In the regular way, the warrior kills the person in the front of him and thus entering the next tier. But as this was a rotating formation , the way would be blocked by the soldiers and no other person would be able to enter it. But instead of killing the person infront of him,Abhimanyu killed the two adjacent soldiers of the person in the front and thrashing him too with his chariot and thus creating much more space that would facilitate the Pandavas (other than Arjuna who was diverted and was unaware of the conspiracy) coming from behind to help him.

But because of the power of boon he got, Saindhava aka Jayadhradha, the brother-in-law of Kauravas was successful in obstructing the Pandavas in their way leaving Ahimanyu alone. Even though he was trapped , he managed to kill prominent figures like Lakshmana(Duryodhana's son),Rukmartha and King Brihadbala.

Karna cutoff his bow from behind and Kripacharya killed his chariot driver. He then took up a sword but that too was cutoff by Drona with his arrows. Abhimanyu picked up all the discarded weapons and continued his fight. He then picked up a chariot wheel and it was said that he managed to kill 10,000 people with that .He threw it on the face of Drona but he escaped the threat with the help of Karna. Finally he was killed by numerous Kauravas and his body was punched by innumerable swords.

The story of Abhimanyu and Padmavyuha clearly depicts the dangerous consequences of half knowledge . Even though one is powerful and dedicated, its not enough to succeed as was said ignorance is bliss and half knowledge is perilous. The consequences of a plethora of half-digested theoretical knowledge are deplorable and often terrible.

Vishwaroop Darshan to Dhritarashtra

Dhritarashtra is well known as the King of Hastinapura and father of Kauravas. He was born as the son of Vichitravirya's first wife Ambika and was fathered by Vyasa. Dhritarashtra, along with his younger brother Pandu was trained in military arts by Bhishma and Kripacharya. Though Dritarashtra was born blind, it was said that he can crush an iron rod with his hand. Though he was the elder heir, he was denied the thrown becasue of his disability. This made him burn with jealousy and he turned him into a maniac. But soon after Pandu's abnegation of the throne, Dhritarshtra was administered as the King of Hastinapura by Bhishma. He was married to Gandhari, the princess of Gandhara(present Afghanisthan). When Gandhari was in trouble conceiving, he went into a relationship with her maid Sugadha, begetting Yuyutsu. Yuyutsu was the only son of Dhritarasthra who survived the Kurukshetra war and was appointed as the incharge of Indraprasta after the war. So, Dhritarashtra wa...

The First Tape Recorder

Can anyone guess when had the first tape recorder started working? There was an intriguing fact behind the discovery of this tape recorder. I used the word "Discovery" instead of "Invention" as my intention is to speak about the eternal tape recorder used during the time of Mahabharata and not the material thing that we generally use. Coming to the topic, we all knew that the sacred "VishnuSahasraNamam" which was a composition of 1000 names of Lord Vishnu was delivered by Bhishma during his last days of life to his grandsons Pandavas and also to Maharshi Vyasa. After having heard the exalting of Lord Vishnu by Bhishma, Yudhishtira realized that none of them have written the 1000 names spelt by Bhishma. As these names were very sacred and helpful to the mankind in demolishing their sins, he requested Lord Krishna to suggest a way in which they can get the names . Krishna smiled and looked at Sahadeva and Maharshi Vyasa. Sahadeva was wearing a ...

Hari-Kul-Esh

Hari-Kul-Esh Well ,the exact interpretation of the above stated word is "Descendant of Lord Vishnu ". Let us keep this aside for a moment and get back to it when we needed. During the time of Kurukshetra war, Lord Krishna was by the side of Pandavas and 10,000 most powerful Yadava warriors were by the side of Kauravas. When Duryodhana and Arjuna came to entreat help from Lord Krishna, he asked them to chose between him and 10,000 equivalently powerful warriors. He even said he shall not take part in violence but would give any suggestions if needed. This is when Duryodhana chose 10,000 warriors and Arjuna chose Krishna. Balarama, who was the elder brother of Krishna and eighth incarnation of Maha Vishnu ,was not really happy for this war. He never really wanted a dispute between the brothers and disengaged himself from the war. It was known that he went on a pilgrimage in North-West direction and returned to Dwaraka after some time period. So, there was not even a chance t...

The Seven Immortals

अश्वत्थामा बलिव्र्यासो हनूमांश्च विभीषण:।  कृप: परशुरामश्च सप्तएतै चिरजीविन:॥ According to Hindu Mythology, there are seven immortals namely  Ashwaddhama, Bali, Vyasa, Hanuman, Vibhishana, Krupacharya, Parashurama. When we closely observe and validate the credibility of the above stanza, we'll find an interesting and intriguing definition that was buried deeply inside it. The seven immortals(Chranjivis) resemble the seven attributes of man, which as long as they live will exist. 1)Ashwaddhama- He was the son of Drona and described as a mighty warrior and one of eleven Rudras. He was born with a gem on his forehead and possess complete mastery over 64 forms of art.Though he was a great personality,he murdered the sons of Pandavas in a fury while they were sleeping. He will remain as a symbol of knowledge covered by the clouds of cruelty. 2)Bali- He was a demon king of three worlds known for his benefaction who was blessed as an immortal by Lord Vshnu during hs V...

The Krishna Intercession

Lord Krishna or Krushna is widely recognized as "Swayam Bhagawan" i.e., the complete incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He is unquenchable, enchanting, graceful, unflinching and a lionhearted personality. The complete episode of Intercession(Rayabaram) is nonpareil. It show cases the prowess of Lord Krishna in dealing with the Kauravas whose minds were completely occupied with anger developed on Pandavas. When Yudhishtira asked Lord Krishna to settle the disputes between Pandavas and Kauravas through his embassy, the Lord himself knows that the agreement between the two groups of brothers is not possible. But Yudhishtira has come down to a level such that even if they get 5 cities as a part of the treaty, they would stop themselves from participating in the war. This caused the predicament. What if Duryodhana accepts this treaty? When would Dharma Samstapana be accomplished? Now the major task bestowed upon the Lord was to make sure this treaty doesn't come true.  Lord,on his w...

Who is God..?

According to our ancient texts,God is the one who is fully replete with the six opulence s namely Strength, Fame, Wealth, Knowledge,Beauty and Renunciation. God is described as omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent and also held to be incorporeal and to be without gender, yet many religions describe and worship God in a material form by conferring a masculine gender. He is the reservoir of all auspicious qualities and is the ultimate goal for all Yogis and whoever delight in his inconceivable past times. They believe that whenever and wherever there is a decline n religious practice and a predominant rise of irreligion,He descends Himself to deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants as well as to re-establish the principles of religion. There are millions of atheists who strongly oppose the concept of God and his existence but there are trillions of devotees who are in the service of God by virtue of their respective capabilities. For me, God is a term coined for a feeling ...

Definition of Guru

गुशब्दस्त्वन्धकारः स्यात्‌ रुशब्दस्तन्निरोधकः। अन्धकारनिरोधित्वात्‌ गुरुरित्यभिधीयते॥ १६॥ "gu" refers to darkness and "ru" refers to the one who dispels it.Hence the word "GURU" can be defined as the person who dispels darkness i.e., ignorance. But can we confine ourselves to the meaning that Guru is just a physical personality? Certainly not.The word Guru is something beyond physical interpretation. It is eternal. We all heard the story of Ekalavya, the tribal prince who had studied archery just by keeping the statue of Drona. If 'Guru' is physical, what made him achieve his goal of becoming the most powerful archer in the world? The answer is the urge he had to learn and mainly his dedication and hard work. When we are pure at heart and determined to our goal ,all eternal forces in the world come together and help us in achieving what we want. These forces sometimes take a physical form.Like Lord Krishna, who came to the aid of Arj...
