Can anyone guess when had the first tape recorder started working?
There was an intriguing fact behind the discovery of this tape recorder. I used the word "Discovery" instead of "Invention" as my intention is to speak about the eternal tape recorder used during the time of Mahabharata and not the material thing that we generally use.
Coming to the topic, we all knew that the sacred "VishnuSahasraNamam" which was a composition of 1000 names of Lord Vishnu was delivered by Bhishma during his last days of life to his grandsons Pandavas and also to Maharshi Vyasa.
After having heard the exalting of Lord Vishnu by Bhishma, Yudhishtira realized that none of them have written the 1000 names spelt by Bhishma. As these names were very sacred and helpful to the mankind in demolishing their sins, he requested Lord Krishna to suggest a way in which they can get the names .
Krishna smiled and looked at Sahadeva and Maharshi Vyasa. Sahadeva was wearing a "Soota Spatika" which was treated as a form of Lord Shiva. Its specialty was that it can absorb the sound waves ad store them in it. Krishna asked Sahadeva to pray Lord Shiva in order to get back the absorbed sound waves from it so that Vyasa could hear it and note down all the 1000 names.
Sahadeva, along with all the Pandavas prayed Lord Shiva to help them. As it was a wish to spread good and the determination was made by his Alma mater Lord Krishna who himself was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Shiva allowed to retrieve the sound waves from the Spatika and thus Vyasa has written it.
In this way the First Tape Recorder worked in order to save the world from sins.
This information was given to the world by His Holiness Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Mahaswamy who was the then chair of Kachi Peetham when a reporter came to interview him way back in 1940 with a tape recorder in his hand.
